WAKO USA Kickboxing: Effective Strategies for World Championship Success

WAKO USA Kickboxing: Effective Strategies for World Championship Success

The World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO) has more than 130 member countries as of March 2023, which shows that the sport has become very popular worldwide. This huge growth has made the competition more challenging, and kickboxers must practice and improve their skills. With the increase in WAKO world competitions, it is clear that kickboxing is becoming more popular around the world. As an international athlete and PhD student in sports science, I will tell you some essential points about common weaknesses observed in US kickboxers competing in WAKO championships.

Strategy for success in Waco competitions

Main weakness: Excessive use of MMA style

Because MMA is so prevalent in America, WAKO USA kickboxers have become accustomed to using techniques from this style. Unfortunately, these techniques do not work well in WAKO kickboxing. Techniques such as wide stance, no footwork, lower and open guard, and open palms are ineffective in kickboxing. For kickboxers, it’s crucial to focus on foot movement, delivering fast and accurate strikes, and maintaining a proper guard, because there’s no ground fighting in kickboxing.

Using a professional boxing style

Another problem with American kickboxers is that they imitate professional boxers. In WAKO kickboxing, unlike professional boxing, which focuses only on punching, both punching and kicking are essential. If kickboxers only use a boxing style, they will face problems because the two sports' techniques, methods, and scoring systems are very different.

Excessive weight loss

Many kickboxers lose weight and follow a strict diet before a fight with MMA athletes. However, in WAKO kickboxing, unlike MMA, they do not have enough time to rehydrate after the weigh-in. It can impair their performance and harm their health, causing dehydration, difficulty thinking, muscle weakness, loss of balance, and increased risk of injury. The Difference Between Tatami and Ring

Kickboxers who want to perform well in tatami and ring styles must understand the differences and practice accordingly. My scientific article, recently published in the  Russian Journal of Physical Education and Sports, has good tips for coaches and athletes who want to improve at both styles.

Now that kickboxing is growing and evolving worldwide, American kickboxers must adjust their programs and training. If they can identify and address these common weaknesses, they can perform much better and achieve more success in WAKO championships.
